Tantalus’ International Basketball Tournament, IBT, is the longest-living tradition of Tantalus – a tournament that takes place annually, usually on the first weekend of May. Every edition features a theme that gives the tournament its flair, supported by the themed jerseys. Since 2017 the jerseys have been supplied by popsport, which made it possible to design jerseys with a lot of different colors and details. Participants definitely know how to rock them, as they have been spotted in a lot of different countries and even NBA games.
By organizing IBT, you have to deal with a lot of different parties. The SSC, ESSF, first aid, food suppliers, party locations, sponsors, jersey manufacturers, teams, referees, fans, etc. Even though there is preparation in advance, there are always challenges that we have to overcome once they occur. Two years ago we had a participant who brought his dog to the tournament (which is not allowed by the SSC). Micky from the committee got injured in his eye and needed to go to the hospital on Saturday morning. The craziest moment was that during the finals the roof started leaking. The SSC was panicking and even closed the building for the other sporters because of the flooding. After some time they allowed us to finish the tournament. Everything turned out fine at the end. Last year, we hosted the “Pharaoh’s Curse” edition. Teams from around Europe joined and thrilled us with their amazing skills. Thankfully, no unexpected events took place during the weekend, and everything run smoothly.
